The Watson-Glaser™ III (or W-G III) is the revised version of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal II. It was designed to be a timed test that can be completed in both supervised AND unsupervised contexts and as such it is a useful screener of critical thinking ability.

W-G III is comprised of 40 multiple choice items (taken from a large bank) and can be completed in 30 minutes. An untimed version, W-G III untimed, is available for assessing critical thinking in a development context or for those requiring reasonable adjustments during recruitment.

The W-G III is useful for assessing an individual’s ability to recognize assumptions, evaluate arguments, and draw conclusions. Critical thinking ability is an important ability in roles requiring an individual to work with business information, draw logical conclusions, determine strategy, reduce risk and maximize organizational performance.

The test is suitable for unsupervised (un-proctored) administration due to “item-bank” design whereby questions are randomly selected from a large pool.

What the W-G III Measures

The W-G III assesses overall critical thinking ability by measuring three sub-areas:

  • Recognizing Assumptions
  • Evaluating Arguments
  • Drawing Conclusions
